India’s senior living sector has been ignored much and there’s a strong need for senior housing in the country considering the fact the life expectancy has risen to a level it has never before touched earlier. According to a report by Jones Lang LaSalle India’s Senior living sector is at a crossroads and much care is required for such population.
The firm added the 60+ population is the fastest growing segment in the world. As for the statistics, there are about 98 million elderly people in the country with a growth rate of 3.8% and it is estimated that this number would rise to about 240 million by 2050. According to Census of India projections this population would account for 20% of the country’s entire population.
According to the firm, traditionally the senior citizens used to live with their children but now in this world of industrialization and globalization the young generations are travelling to other parts of the country or even abroad for various purposes and thereby the senior citizens have to live alone. This is the primary reason for the need of senior living homes.
According to this report the environment being developed for the senior citizens under these real estate projects shall recognize and address these issues to ensure to them comfort and compatibility. It should also consider the traditional community life upholding their respect and self esteem.
