Just till the other day he didn’t see any promise from his acres of farmland spread across the Thar Desert of Rajasthan. However all that has changed now as Vijay Singh earned a whopping $60,000 after he sold off a part of his property located in this desert state.
The country is on the verge of harnessing its solar energy which is in abundance in Rajasthan. As such properties which have been lying unused in this sun-drenched region will be much sought after by energy companies that will indirectly help meet the country’s energy needs.
This desert in North West India covers an area of 200,000 square kilometers. According to Dr Pande of Rajasthan Central Arid Zone Research Institute this region has plenty of solar radiation which can provide solar energy for almost three hundred days a year or approximately nine hours per day. This is enough to meet the solar energy requirements of energy companies. The $19bn National Solar Mission launched by the government is expected to generate 20,000 mw of solar electricity by 2022.
Apart from abundance of solar energy it is also the abundance of land in Rajasthan that is attracting both private investors and the government. A lot of government and private land is available here and these are all waste land not fit for agriculture. According to leading real estate agents this solar revolution has tripled the prices of land in the Thar Desert. Prices are expected to increase further once Reliance starts its 5 megawatt solar plant in Khimsar, a nearby town.
